Up for auction is a
very rare
vintage 1944, WW2 black & white original photos of a
Neptune party to celebrate crossing of the equator on the
HMS "Trouncer" Aircraft Carrier.
These photos were recently discovered in an old house estate along with several other old WW2 photos, all dating to 1944.
The ceremony, as seen in the photos, is a centuries-old ritual to inaugurate Equator-crossing virgins. Ship sailors who have never traversed the nautical line are forced to prove they are worthy to make the transition.
The photos show the spectacle with a common cast of characters, with Neptune as the prominent figure and other sailors dressed up in costumes with makeup. These roles are all played by “shellbacks”—those who have gone through the ritual before. The first-time participants are known as “pollywogs" and were passing through run-around bullying & performing often degrading tasks opposite the ship's crew on the flight deck.

These photographs are is in fair condition for their age. One photo has wrinkles on the upper side and a missing small piece in the center (please see photos).
This is a rare and unique set of photos that capture seafaring culture during WW2. Do not let this set slip through your fingers.
