San Jose State postpones game after running back from L.A. is struck, killed by bus

SAN JOSE, Calif. — At 10:07 p.m., just before the San Jose State University Police Department shut down the streets to the campus in anticipation of the late-night festivities, a school spokesman said a runner was struck by a bus and killed, making him the 13th person to die in a crash in the days to come.

“A male student was run over by a semi, sustaining injuries and a fatal injury to the left side of his body,” said university spokesman Jim Gatto.

The name of the runner was not immediately released. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died. No other details were released, and it was not immediately clear if he was enrolled at SJSU.

More than 11 million people were expected to watch the NCAA Tournament tonight. Hundreds of thousands of students were expected to be at the game as well, both players and fans.

About a half hour after the runner was struck, police closed off the streets in and out of San Jose, and put concertgoers and other motorists on a secondary street for a traffic-calming exercise.

San Jose is the third college town to pass a coronavirus-related death this week. The other two were in Colorado and Massachusetts.

A runner, struck by a bus, was killed overnight, and a student was killed during an NCAA Tournament game. Both were students at San Jose State University.
