In front of Užice City hall, Serbia’s largest square in central Belgrade, thousands of people gathered to march in their city’s annual Pride parade on Saturday for the first time in history.

But police fired tear gas and rubber bullets, and at least six people were injured. Scores of counter-protesters were attacked with bottles and stones.

“This is a very shameful day for us,” said one young man wearing a rainbow flag on the back of his head and holding up a rainbow flag over his heart.

“This is an attack on all gay people,” said another.

Police claimed that the Pride march, which was part of the European Capital of Culture celebrations, was “stirred up” by people who were taking advantage of the fact that Serbia was hosting the event.
